Home / Saquon Barkley dominates in return to New York as Eagles blow out Giants
Saquon Barkley Shines in Return to New York as Eagles Rout Giants
Saquon Barkley made a commanding return to MetLife Stadium, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a decisive 28-3 victory over his former team, the New York Giants. Barkley, who spent six seasons with the Giants, was dominant for three quarters, but rather than seeking revenge or padding his stats, he spent much of the final quarter on the sidelines. Despite the jeers from Giants fans, some of whom booed him for joining the Eagles, Barkley remained unfazed.
“Numbers don’t do it for me,” Barkley said after the game. “Of course, I want to be great, and I care about my legacy, but at the end of the day, I’m all about the team. I was happy to see Kenny [Gainwell] get out there and get some reps.”
Barkley ran for a staggering 176 yards, the most he’s ever rushed for at MetLife, surpassing his previous performances in the stadium he once called home. Though he could have pushed for his career-high of 189 rushing yards, he chose to stay out of the game for most of the fourth quarter, returning only for one critical play. That play—a fourth-and-goal “tush push”—helped Jalen Hurts into the end zone, effectively sealing the victory.
Barkley set the tone early on, scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and breaking off runs of 55, 38, and 41 yards—three of the longest plays for the Eagles that day. “It felt great,” he said of the early touchdown. “Anytime you score is good. I didn’t let the moment overwhelm me, whether it was at MetLife or not.”
Despite the memorable performance, Barkley faced hostility from the crowd, acknowledging the chorus of boos that greeted him. “It’s hard not to hear that,” he admitted. “I didn’t help myself when I said earlier in the week I didn’t think I’d get booed, but they’re booing for a reason. It’s a compliment at the end of the day.”
Adding fuel to the fire, fans burned Barkley’s jersey in effigy during the game. “That was crazy,” he said. “I’ve seen it happen on social media, but this was different. I was locked in, listening to my music, and I saw fans pointing at something. Then I saw smoke and thought, ‘Where’s my jersey?’ I’ve never experienced anything like that, and I hope I don’t again. But in that moment, I was just ready for third-and-one.”
Now that the game is behind him, Barkley made it clear that he’s ready to move on from the Giants storyline. While the victory was sweet and his performance exceptional, he expressed as much relief as joy. He also took the opportunity to pay respect to the organization that drafted him.
“To be honest, I’m so happy this game is over,” Barkley confessed. “I’ve always said I’m thankful for the Giants organization. They drafted me, and I’ve still got nothing but love and respect for the guys over there. But I’m happy to be an Eagle, and most importantly, we got the win today in the division. Now, it’s onto the next one.”
Barkley’s return to New York may have been filled with tension, but his focus remains forward-looking, as he continues to build his legacy with his new team, the Philadelphia Eagles.
